Holocaust survivor Vera Meisels read stories and poems inspired by her childhood experiences during World War II. Selections included the story “The Piano” from her book Threshold of Pain and the poems “Firefly,” “Hiding place,” and “Snow” from her book Terezin’s Firefly.
At the age of eight, Meisels was sent to the Theresienstadt ghetto in Terezin. The Nazis established Theresienstadt as an elaborate scheme to show that they were treating prisoners humanely. It was a prison to thousands of scholars, performers, musicians, actors, writers and philosophers from Central Europe.
Meisels was a cast member of the play The Fireflies, which was performed while she was a prisoner at Terezin. She is the narrator of Dr. Lauren McConnell’s adaptation of The Fireflies, performed April 4-April 7 at Central Michigan University.
